Topic 3

Section D: Jesus Christ: Hypostatic Union (One Person with Two Natures)

On Jesus is God (His divine nature)

worshipped: Matthew 2:2,11; 14:33; John 9:35-38 (Revelation 22:8-9)

prayed to: Acts 7:59

omniscient: John 21:17

On Jesus is a man (His human nature)

grew in wisdom: Luke 2:52

died: Romans 5:8

body of flesh and bones: John 1:14; 6:25; Luke 24:39

human emotions of Jesus (all expressed without sin):

i. wept: John 11:35

vii. dreaded death: Mark 14:36

viii. joy: Hebrews 12:2

ix. despised: Hebrews 12:2

x. godly fear: Hebrews 5:7

Section E: Communicatio Idiomatum (communion of properties)

In Christ’s Hypostatic Union, what is proper to one nature is

sometimes in Scripture attributed to the Person denominated by the

other nature:

Denominated by Human Nature

John 3:13; 6:61-62; 17:5

Denominated by Divine Nature

Acts 20:28; 1 Corinthians 2:8; 1 John 3:16

One Extra-Biblical Example

1. Mary gave birth to God

“So have they dared to call the holy virgin, mother of God, not as though

the nature of the Word or His Godhead received the origin of their being

from the holy virgin, but because there was born from her His holy body

rationally ensouled, with which the Word was hypostatically united and is

said to have been begotten in the flesh.” (2nd Letter of Cyril to Nestorius;

431 Council of Ephesus)

Section F: Enhypostatic Union

a. “the Person of the Son of God serves as Person for the

humanity as well as the deity,” Geerhardus Vos, Reformed

Dogmatics, 3.27, 43.

b. Anhypostatis (not a person): Christ’s human nature does not

possess a human personality (anhypostatis) but always had

personhood in and only in union with the Divine Person God the

Son (enhypostatis)

I am

a. I am sayings of Jesus Christ (Same "I am" in John as written in Ex. 3:14)

Exodus 3:14; (1) John 6:35 (v38,40-42); (2) 8:12 (1 John 1:5);

(3) 10:7 (Psalm 23:6; 2 Cor. 5:18-19); (4) 10:11 (Psalm 23:1);

(5) 11:25 (1 Cor. 15:20-22); (6) 14:6 (1 John 2:23; 2 John 9;

Deut. 32:39); (7) 15:1 (Psalm 80:8,14-15; Isaiah 5:4,7; 2 Cor.5:17);

(8) 8:58

b. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the second Person in the Trinity, being

very and eternal God, refers to His human nature

Matt. 26:38; Mark 14:36; Luke 24:39
